The New York-Bred Advantage
New York-breds can compete in both open races and races restricted exclusively to registered New York-breds. This provides more opportunities to find the right competition throughout a horse’s career.
Restricted races offer lucrative purses in maiden, allowance and stakes company while drawing from a smaller pool of eligible horses. Owners benefit from greater placement flexibility, additional earning opportunities and a clearer path for developing their horse.
How Does Fractional Racehorse Ownership Work?
Fractional racehorse ownership allows you to own a percentage of a Thoroughbred without taking on the cost and responsibility of owning the entire horse or managing the operation. Each partnership is divided into ownership shares, giving multiple owners the opportunity to participate in the horse's racing career while sharing expenses and potential earnings based on their ownership percentage.
WTR owners receive regular updates and opportunities to experience Thoroughbred racing from an owner's perspective, including barn visits, morning training, paddock access, and race-day experiences when available.
You own the horse. We manage the operation. Together, we experience the racing.
How Much Does It Cost to Own Part of a Racehorse?
Racehorse ownership is simpler than it sometimes appears. There are really two costs to think about: buying your share of the horse and maintaining that horse while it is in training.
The purchase price can vary enormously. A horse might cost $30,000, $100,000, $500,000 or considerably more. Your initial investment depends on the price of the horse and the percentage you own.
After the purchase, however, the basic economics become much more predictable.
A professionally trained Thoroughbred requires essentially the same everyday care whether it develops into a major stakes horse or competes at the maiden claiming level. There is still a trainer, feed and bedding, veterinary and farrier care, transportation, and the normal expenses of keeping a racehorse healthy and in training.
So if you own 5% of a racehorse, you generally pay 5% of those operating expenses — regardless of how valuable or talented the horse becomes.
Put simply, it doesn't cost dramatically more to feed and train a Kentucky Derby winner than it does a $30,000 maiden claimer. The difference is what the horse may be capable of earning.
